Vines #2

16" x 20" Oil on Canvas

The second in a series of reflections based on squash vines that had formerly grown on my porch, this painting is a little bit more lively. Clearly, the plant still had some green leaves and stalks when I pulled it from its pot. Something struck me about this growth, which reached beyond reason or practicality.

Vines #1

16" x 20" Oil and Collage on Canvas

Inspired by acorn squash plants which once grew and flourished on my back deck, although they produced little fruit. However, I enjoyed the squash vines, and I grieved the end of their cultivation. Their intricate vines and mottled, large leaves had been so comforting and provocative, growing in a miraculously abundant manner and yet struggling to produce two very small squash. Their lines were so lovely and sorrowful. Collaged papers depict Bolivia in the 1950 and 60s, including agricultural laborers.
